Canstruction Orange County is holding it’s 5th annual Design-Build Competition on September 1-23 to benefit the Orange County Food Bank. Canstruction is a charity committed to ending world hunger. It’s an international community service project by the design & construction industry to benefit local food banks where teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors and/or those professionals mentoring students, associations or business compete by designing and building structures made entirely out of canned foods. Here are three of the sculptures that are already finished for this year:
Companies and organizations, with the help of sponsors like the Orange County Chapters of AIA, SDA and SMPS, the Festival of Children Foundation, and event benefactor, the Orange County Food Bank create amazing work each year. We are so excited to design and coordinate the Awards Gala at the end of the event where the 2012 Canstruction Orange County winner will be announced!

Food Bank Facts

Since January 2009 the requests for food assistance from the Orange County Food Bank have more than DOUBLED.

Over 500,000 Orange County residents are food insecure.

Orange County’s high cost of housing, and the relatively low wages paid to our growing service industry, contribute to the need for assistance.

The Orange County Food Bank distributed over 19 million pounds of food last year.

In addition to direct support given to high-risk citizens, the Orange County Food Bank supplies 400 local charities, including churches, senior centers, shelters, soup kitchens, and social service agencies.

The Orange County Food Bank serves seniors on fixed incomes, disabled persons, the unemployed, the homeless, and the working poor.

The Orange County Food Bank also distributes 23,000 food boxes each month directly to high-risk people in need, 90% of whom are vulnerable seniors.

Over 25,000 Orange County Food Bank volunteers assist in the sorting, packing and distribution of food.

There is an inadequate supply of food, the demand is growing, and more help is needed, and you have the power to help.
